WHO CARES?

I do, and so do thousands of others; and we care so deeply that we are not going to allow OUR starlight to be erased by light pollution!

THE universe may be nothing more than a bunch of white dots in the nighttime sky to most people, but once the stars are invisible, we humans will be the losers.

CAN you step outside your residence on any clear, moonless night, look up, and see thousands of stars and the Milky Way river of starlight streaming across the sky?

MOST likely not. Tonight, at least 70% of Americans will not be able to see the celestial spectacle! Only about 30% of Americans can see unsullied starshine without traveling to some distant unpopulated area.

FOR thousands of years your ancestors looked at the star-slathered night sky in consummate darkness. But we, you and me, all of us, are on a headlong and accelerating rush to ruin the night sky with wasteful light pollution.

AT the rate starlight’s disappearing now, it’ll be extinct by the year 2020! Gone forever! Invisible! Starlight will be nothing more than white dots on computer screens and phony stars projected on planetarium ceilings!

WHO'S to blame?

DO you remember the little creek you played in as a child? Remember the field you traveled across on your way to school? Remember the woods (which you thought of as vast forests) that you explored on your way home from school? Remember the vacant lot where you played “pick up” baseball, softball, soccer, football, etc.?

THEY’RE gone! Developed. Turned to houses, Mall-Warts, parking lots and parking garages, resorts, casinos and entertainment complexes, upscale shopping malls, Stop and Robs (convenience stores), etc. And the stars? Well, they’re fast fading, too, and soon to vanish.

SO, who is to blame? It would be easy to blame the vast, powerful and affluent out-of-control growth industry, the developers, the land speculators, the real estate corporations, because, after all, developers develop! Indeed, the only reason there’s development is because developers develop (Oops, gotcha your toes on that one, didn't I?). And the only reason developers develop is because the rest of us allow them to do so! Sooo...who is to blame?

US! You and me and all the others who are unwilling to take a stand and stop developers and development--stop the evil that brings light pollution into our communities
