Ames, Iowa, at Night.
This unretouched, unenhanced photograph was taken from an altitude of about 15,000 feet (3 miles) over the center of Ames. The edges of the image are approximately the city limit boundaries. North is at the top. The brightest lights are located in the commercial areas of the community or over large parking lots. Most of the dark area in the image are residential areas where the streetlights have been capped so the light shines down (Smart Lights). Where streetlights are still visible, they are not yet converted to Smart Lights. We have much to do, but we are on the track to a community of 50,000-plus people with a Lightscape of Smart Lights where starshine is important! You can start a Dark Sky Revolution in your community tonight! Image by Sam Wormley.
